Background: Cisplatin has been used as a chemotherapeutic agent to treat many different cancers. A well-known side effect of cisplatin is nephrotoxicity, which is the primary dose-limiting toxicity. Hydration in conjunction with appropriate diuresis can decrease the incidence of nephrotoxicity. Objectives: This article aims to identify best practices in supportive therapy for patients.   Nephrotoxicity is an important and preventable cause of nephrotoxin induced acute kidney injury (AKI) as well as chronic kidney disease (CKD). Drugs and toxins may cause renal injury based on several pathophysiological mechanisms. The spectrum of injury may vary from subtle to severe.

Nephrotoxicity is a significant treatment complication that has limited the clinical utility of cyclosporine. A number of recent studies have examined novel pathways and potential therapeutic targets in the prevention of cyclosporine nephrotoxicity. This page includes the following topics and synonyms: Nephrotoxic Drug, Nephrotoxin, Drug-induced Nephrotoxicity, Medication Causes of Acute Kidney Injury, Medication Causes of Acute Tubular Necrosis, Medication Causes of Interstitial Nephritis, Medication Causes of Glomerulonephritis, Medication Causes of Prerenal Failure, Medication Causes of Postrenal Failure, Toxic Nephropathy, Drug.

With the advent of effective cytotoxic chemotherapy, attention has turned to the side effects of these widely used agents (Table ). These side effects include tumor lysis syndrome, paraneoplastic glomerulonephritis, obstructive uropathy, and nephrotoxicity with renal failure and electrolyte disturbances.

These are more common in the geriatric population secondary to polypharmacy/drug Author: Christopher J. Logothetis, Vasily Assikis, Jose E. Nephrotoxicity is the principal adverse event associated with systemic administration of cidofovir. 94,95 Cidofovir concentrates in renal cells in amounts times greater than in other tissues, producing severe nephrotoxicity involving the proximal convoluted tubule when concomitant hydration and administration of probenecid are not employed.

Patients at highest risk of drug-induced nephrotoxicity are those with one or more of the following: age older than 60 years, baseline renal insufficiency (e.g., GFR Cited by: Nephrotoxicity book   Nephrotoxicity can be defined as the adverse effect of substances on renal function (Perazella, ).These substances can include molds and fungi, cancer therapeutics such as cisplatin, antibiotics such as aminoglycosides, metals such as mercury, arsenic and lead, and drugs of Cited by: Define nephrotoxicity.

22 Renal damage caused by. There has been a growing awareness that nephrotoxicity represents a key factor in human nephropathies, where, irrespective of the causative agent, only a few clinical end-effects are diagnosed. Thus nephropathies are generally classified as acute or chronic renal failure, malignancies or.

Aminoglycoside (AG) nephrotoxicity is a well-known occurrence. However, 50 years after the discovery of the first AG (streptomycin), nephrotoxicity is still very difficult to predict and avoid ().To date, no model has completely described the pharmacodynamic behavior of AG nephrotoxicity, even though the mechanism of this toxicity has been widely studied (4, 7, 15, 27).

Drug-induced nephrotoxicity is a renal dysfunction that occurs as a result of exposure to nephrotoxic drugs. It is a common problem in certain clinical situations such as underlying renal dysfunction, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and sepsis.

Drugs can cause mild to moderate nephrotoxic problems such as intrarenal obstruction, interstitial nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, acid-base and fluid Cited by: 1. The kidneys normally receive 20% of the cardiac output.

Drugs are filtered and/or secreted and then progressively concentrated in the urine. Therefore, these organs are especially vulnerable to the toxic effects of many drugs, including chemotherapy toxicity is often a dose-limiting adverse effect of chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy agents can affect the microvasculature, the glomerulus. Find many great new & used options and get the best deals for Nephrotoxicity: In Vitro and in Vivo, Animals to Man (, Hardcover) at the best online prices at eBay.

When kidney damage occurs, you are unable to rid your body of excess urine, and wastes. Your blood electrolytes (such as potassium, and magnesium) will all become elevated. Prospective cohort studies of AKI have documented the frequency of drug-induced nephrotoxicity to be approximately % in adult populations [1–3].

Nephrotoxicity is a significant concern in pediatrics with 16% of hospitalized AKI events being attributable primarily to a drug. The epidemiology of tubular disorders is unclear as a standard Cited by:   Nephrotoxicity mechanism 1. Nephrotoxic Mechanisms of Drugs and Environmental Toxins 2.
